Alfred Gaulier was a French journalist and politician. \nHis father was a cavalry officer and he seemed destined for a military career.\nAt the time of the coup that brought Napoleon III to power he was a sub-lieutenant in the infantry. \nHe signed a document voting against the coup, and was forced to resign. \nAfter a difficult period, he found work as a journalist throughout the remainder of the Second French Empire and the early years of the French Third Republic.\nHe was a radical republican, and was elected deputy for the Seine department from 1886 to 1889.
